Russian Music & Cultural Event

The Canberra Pushkin Club will hold its first event for 2021. The Canberra Slavic Choir will sing favourite Russian songs, and opera singer Angela Giblin will talk about Russian singers and composers and how they influenced her.

The Canberra Slavic Choir (CSC), formed in February 2019 comprises around 10 active members, including its current conductor, Ms. Nina Semenov, who also conducts the choir of St. John The Baptist Cathedral of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad, at Narrabundah. The CSC’s first performance was for a community event held in May 2019 to mark WWII Victory Day and remember the sacrifice of those who fought and defeated Nazism on the eastern f Russian, Serbian and Ukrainian language songs of different genres. Prior to COVID-19 restrictions in the ACT, the Choir last performed publicly in the 2nd half of 2019 at several Russian and Serbian community events. Rehearsals continued through 2020, leading to the program for this Canberra Pushkin Club event.

The choir will perform 5 Russian songs:

  • Katyusha (Катюша);
  • Vecherny Zvon (Evening Bell, Вечерний звон)
  • Kakim ty byl (Just as you were, Каким ты был)
  • Kon (Horse, Конь).
  • Vo Kuznitsye (In the Smithy, Во кузнице)

Angela Giblin studied at the Vienna Academy and has performed many operatic roles in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and Australia, and was Head of Voice at the ANU School of Music. She will present a talk about Russian composers and performers and how they have influenced her.
